It is the most dynamic work of the Municipality,
which constitutes the basic infrastructure for Aglantzia cultural
upgrading.
The Deputy President of the Republic of Cyprus, President of the House
of Representatives, Alexis Galanos, inaugurated it under the mayoralty
of Andreas Petrou on 25 September 1992.
It is the pride of the Municipality and constitutes the cultural identity
of Aglantzia and a reference for all Cyprus. It succeeded in its aim
and mission, which it the qualitative cultural offer to the citizens,
the revival of old Aglantzia and the communication with the broader
society.
Taking seriously into account the morphological structure in stages
of the land in the area, all the functions of the centre (Open air
square, Amphitheatre, ''Spilies'', Exhibition hall, Restaurant, Small
Bar, Ayiou Georgiou and Panayias Churches, Aglantzia Old Cemetery,
Car Park) are integrated in the natural environment, adapted in stages,
and have as epicentre the heart of the complex, the open air square.
The
architects have tried to conserve unmixed the morphology of the natural
material of the caves, conserving their natural condition, without
many interventions, using plain material such as concrete, terracotta
and naked glass. The artificial introduction of water in the caves
gives a metaphysical feeling to the place.
Square: (800mē) with an unobstructed view on Pentadaktylos
Mountain, it is suitable for open-air exhibitions, theatre, walking
and entertainment.
''Spilies'':(335 mē)
Respecting the environment, an original and spacious 335mē place was
arranged to welcome: Conferences, Exhibitions, and Congresses etc.
It is equipped with air condition and ventilation, appropriate lightening,
furniture, a special built platform. With the seats disposed as in
a theatre, it has a seating capacity of around 120 people.
Exhibition hall (225mē)
It lies at a lower level than the caves and is a natural extension
of the Amphitheatre towards the caves.
Fully equipped, it is suitable for itinerant exhibitions.
Amphitheatre: Turning to advantage the morphology of the
land, part of the theatre is made of natural rock. Its design ensures
the satisfaction of the visitor with the view and acoustics and of
the organisers with the modern changing-rooms and the appropriate
lighting. It has a seating capacity of 1200 seats.
Restaurant - Cafeteria: It serves efficiently every
event of the exhibition halls. An entirely decorated 190mē space able
to welcome up to 80 people. Functioning independently, it is ideal
for social events.
Car park: There are three car parks for visitors.
The two auxiliary car parks lay the one in Old Aglantzia and the other
in ''Platy'' area next to refugee housing. The main car park is found
northeast of ''To Skali''.
Since its opening (1992 the cultural centre has welcomed numerous
remarkable events, such as concerts
with remarkable local and foreign groups (Savvopoulos, Portokaloglou,
Trypes etc.), theatre companies (THOK, DI.PE.THE Kalamatas, Watermill
Theatre etc.), collective exhibitions, conferences, the Open University
conferences, the seminar on ''Dance-Music-Costumes in the Traditional
Society of Cyprus'', the First Pancyprian Folk Dance Competition and
many others.
This architectural work was awarded several times:
- 1st State Award in the Remarkable Architectural Work category, 1995
- On the short list of the World Candidates for the RICS Award, 2000
- Distinction at the 7th World Architectural Trienalle, Sofia, 1994
It is a work of the architects I. Ioackim and A. Loizas, after a Pancyprian
Open Competition. |
