CIVIL MARRIAGES

LAWS

Two laws rule civil marriages in Cyprus:

1. The Marriage Law, Chap. 279 and
2. The 1990 Civil Marriage Law, N. 21/90

Marriages between Cypriots and foreigners or foreigners are celebrated according to the Marriage Law, chap. 279. Marriages between Cypriot citizens belonging to the Greek Community are celebrated according to the Civil Marriage Law 21/90.

In both cases marriages can be celebrated in two ways:

i By notice
ii By special license

The interested couple must compulsorily produce the following documents:
Certificate of celibacy or divorce

Cypriot citizens can be delivered a certificate of celibacy by the President of the community in the parish they live in or, if they are divorced, produce their certificate of divorce.

Foreigners must produce a certificate of celibacy delivered by an official authority of their country (Ministry or Town Hall or other competent authority) or, if they are divorced, their certificate of divorce. All documents must be translated officially (by the Press and Information Office).

An affidavit before the District Court if the divorces have been pronounced more than six months ago or if deemed necessary.

A blood analysis for Thalassaemia (consultative)

It is understood that the foreigner is legally in Cyprus.

By notice: Procedure
Submission of the particulars, personally by the persons about to be married, producing their passports or identity cards if they are Cypriot citizens.

A copy of the notice is hung in a public place.

Delivery of a certificate by the Marriage Officer to each party

If the marriage is not celebrated within three months from the date of presentation of the notice, the procedure is cancelled.
